Bloomberg: Top officials to discuss US troops in postwar Ukraine to secure peace
European and US officials are working to finalize an agreement on security guarantees that could include American troops on the ground in postwar Ukraine, aiming to ensure any peace deal lasts.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Paris talks on January 6 will focus on how to integrate capabilities recently proposed by Washington with plans drawn up by the so-called coalition of the willing that’s made up of Ukraine’s allies, Bloomberg reports.
French President Emmanuel Macron will host the meeting, following a month of discussions among national security advisers. The US delegation will include President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
It remains uncertain what role US forces would play or where they would be stationed if a peace agreement with Russia is reached. European nations have considered creating a multinational “reassurance force,” with Ukraine’s army taking the lead in front-line defence.
The US has also expressed willingness to help monitor a ceasefire, providing intelligence support, the sources said. Drones and satellites would be used to detect any violations, they added.
The recent meetings between US, European, and Ukrainian officials aim to finalise an agreement on security guarantees, though it is unclear if Russian President Vladimir Putin would accept the proposals. Ukraine’s allies plan to press for Russian participation only after a security agreement is reached with the US, according to one source.
Significant challenges remain, particularly over territory, as Moscow seeks the full withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donbas region—a demand Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected.
