British PM to reinforce police with special forces to quell riots
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the deployment of special forces to support the police in quelling ongoing riots across the country.
This decision follows an emergency meeting convened to address the unrest, now in its sixth day, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Starmer emphasized the need for a swift and decisive response to restore order. He pledged to expedite the processing of rioters in the criminal courts and demanded quicker identification of those involved by the police.
The riots, driven by far-right extremists targeting migrants, erupted after a tragic incident in Southport where a 17-year-old British man attacked children at a dance class with a knife. The attack resulted in the deaths of three young girls, with eight other children and two adults injured. False rumours quickly spread, claiming that a Muslim migrant was responsible for the attack, leading to widespread violence against foreigners, mosques, and asylum seeker accommodations.
The attacker, a British citizen, has been apprehended and charged, though his motives remain unclear.
In response to the violence, 378 suspected rioters have been detained nationwide. The clashes have also resulted in dozens of police officers being hospitalized with injuries.
