Canadian couple dies in grizzly bear attack
A grizzly bear attacked and killed two people and their dog in Canada's Banff National Park before being euthanized for having displayed aggressive behaviour.
According to CBC News, Canadian authorities had received an alert late at night on September 29 from a GPS device indicating a bear attack.
The victims of the attack were a Canadian couple, as well as their dog.
According to wildlife and bear safety experts, bear encounters are on the rise as more people head to the outdoors, yet those ending in fatalities are rare, with only 14% of those attacks ending in deaths. An expert told the publication that bear sightings are common in autumn as the animals are actively hunting for food ahead of their winter sleep in the colder months.
The Banff National Park is popular with tourists with over four million visitors each year. It is also home to around 60 grizzly bears, as well as black bears.
