Chancellor Merz blames Russia for unprecedented drone incursions over Germany
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Russia is likely behind many of the drones spotted over Germany.
“We assume that Russia is behind most of these drone flights,” Deutsche Welle quotes Merz as saying.
The German leader described the number of intrusions into other European countries as unprecedented—even compared to the Cold War period.
The only consolation, he noted, was that none of the drones observed so far were armed.
According to the chancellor, the drones appeared to be conducting reconnaissance flights.
Earlier, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder suggested that Russia could be behind the recent drone incidents at Munich Airport. While noting that he could not confirm the claim with certainty, Söder said he believes the appearance of drones near the airport “is somehow connected to Russia."
Munich Airport temporarily suspended operations on the nights of October 3 and 4 after unidentified drones were spotted over the airfield, leading to the cancellation of dozens of scheduled flights.
