ChatGPT mobile app surpasses $3 billion in global consumer spending

20 December 2025 20:10

According to estimates by analytics firm Appfigures, the ChatGPT mobile app reached a new milestone this week, surpassing $3 billion in global consumer spending, TechCrunch reports.

This figure represents total user spending on iOS and Android devices since the app’s launch in May 2023. In 2025 alone, consumers spent $2.48 billion in the ChatGPT mobile app—408% more than the $487 million recorded in 2024 and 5,780% more than the $42.5 million spent in 2023.

These figures point to exceptionally rapid growth in demand for the ChatGPT mobile app compared with other popular software products.

ChatGPT reached $3 billion in consumer spending in just 31 months, whereas market leader TikTok took 58 months to achieve the same level of revenue. The ChatGPT app also hit this milestone faster than major streaming services such as Disney+ and HBO Max, which required 42 and 46 months, respectively.

Among competing apps, Grok by xAI shows a similar trajectory. The Grok chatbot was introduced in late 2023 for X Premium Plus subscribers and became widely available to all users last year. When comparing the pace of consumer spending growth across AI applications, Grok comes closest to matching ChatGPT’s cumulative revenue at a comparable stage after monetisation began.

While $3 billion in revenue signals strong growth in consumer demand, it is not the only way to assess AI app adoption or long-term revenue potential. Mobile users of ChatGPT purchase paid subscriptions such as ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month or ChatGPT Pro for $200 per month for advanced users. However, AI-powered applications can also generate revenue through other channels, including developer offerings and advertising. In addition, ChatGPT recently launched its own app store, which OpenAI plans to monetise in some form in the future.

Meanwhile, Google is exploring ways to transition its successful search advertising business towards AI-based search, placing ads within AI Mode, AI Overviews, AI-powered shopping, and the increasingly AI-driven Discover page. Anthropic, which is more focused on the corporate market, plans to reach $70 billion in revenue by 2028.
