China adopts nuclear energy law reinforcing international commitments
China’s parliament has approved a new nuclear energy law that affirms the country’s obligations under international agreements while encouraging cooperation with other nations in the nuclear field.
According to Chinese media, the legislation, adopted on September 12 at the 17th session of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress, consists of 62 articles across 8 chapters. It is designed to support the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the exchange of scientific and technological achievements in line with legal norms.
The law underscores that China firmly opposes any activities connected to the proliferation of nuclear weapons. It also stresses the importance of countering terrorist threats and advancing the development of a fair and mutually beneficial international system that ensures the safety of nuclear facilities.
Beijing intends to reinforce measures to prevent risks both in the implementation of nuclear research projects and in the operation of nuclear power plants, the report added.
The Nuclear Energy Law of the People’s Republic of China will officially take effect on January 15, 2026.
