China reaffirms push for political settlement in Ukraine
China has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing a political settlement of the war in Ukraine, emphasising the need for international cooperation and continued diplomatic engagement, according to Chinese media reports.
A senior Chinese diplomat stated on February 24 that Beijing is counting on support from the international community in efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and will remain actively involved in the process. The remarks were made by Teng Fei, counsellor at China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, in an explanatory statement issued after the United Nations General Assembly voted on a draft resolution titled “Supporting a Lasting Peace in Ukraine,” CGTN reported.
The vote coincided with the fourth anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine. Teng Fei said that at this significant moment, China hopes the UN General Assembly will play a constructive role in advancing peace between the parties to the conflict.
The resolution was adopted with 107 countries voting in favour, 12 against, and 51 abstaining.
Explaining China’s decision to abstain, Teng Fei said the vote reflected Beijing’s consistent principles and long-standing position on the Ukrainian issue.
He added that negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict have entered a critical phase, stressing that China supports all initiatives directed toward achieving peace. The diplomat called on all sides to maintain a constructive approach and work toward a comprehensive and durable agreement.
Teng Fei also underscored that ensuring long-term peace and stability in Europe requires addressing the root causes of the crisis and establishing a more balanced and effective regional security architecture.
