CIS approves counterterrorism, border security program through 2038
Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member states have approved a cooperation program on counterterrorism extending until 2038.
CIS Deputy Secretary-General Nurlan Seitimov announced that the document was adopted during the Third CIS Conference on Combating Terrorism and Extremism in Dushanbe, Caliber.Az reports, citing Uzbek media.
The participating countries also endorsed a border security program running through 2030.
The CIS has operated a dedicated body, the CIS Anti‑Terrorism Centre (ATC), which was established to coordinate legal, operational, informational and training-related efforts among member states in combating terrorism and violent extremism.
One of its foundational documents is the Program of Cooperation of the CIS Member-States in Combating Terrorism and Other Violent Manifestations of Extremism (2017-2019), which set out key focus areas such as harmonising national legislation, conducting joint special operations, and enhancing analytical and information-sharing capabilities.
Furthermore, the CIS has submitted reports to the United Nations detailing its efforts to “prevent, detect and suppress the activities of terrorist and extremist organisations” under the 1999 Treaty of Cooperation and other instruments.
