Germany deploys Patriot air defense system in Türkiye
A German-operated Patriot air defence system has been deployed at a military base in Türkiye as part of NATO’s efforts to strengthen the alliance’s air defence capabilities.
“Under NATO’s standing defence plan and with the aim of reinforcing the alliance’s air defence, a German Patriot air defence system was deployed in Kürecik on June 24, 2026. It has assumed the role previously carried out by a US Patriot system stationed in the region,” Türkiye’s Ministry of Defence told reporters.
On June 18, an Italian-operated SAMP/T air defence system was also deployed in Türkiye at the main Air Force Command base in Konya. According to Turkish officials, the system was positioned “within the framework of NATO’s standing defence plan to strengthen the alliance’s air defence.”
The reinforcement of air defence capabilities in Türkiye comes as the country prepares to host the NATO summit in Ankara on July 7–8.
