31 October 2024 20:16

The eighth meeting of the Organising Committee for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change was held on October 31.

Samir Nuriyev, Head of the Presidential Administration and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, emphasized that with COP29 just days away, preparations are in the final stages, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

He recalled that President Ilham Aliyev had reviewed the preparatory works at Baku Olympic Stadium on October 17 and provided essential instructions.

Nuriyev indicated that over 100 heads of state and government, along with vice-presidents, are expected to attend the COP29 Leaders' Summit. He also reported that more than 50,000 individuals have already registered for the event, with registration still open, reflecting significant interest from foreign media and non-governmental organizations.

During the meeting, a video showcasing the current status of preparations at the Baku Olympic Stadium was presented.

Concluding the meeting, Nuriyev expressed confidence that Azerbaijan will achieve another historic success at COP29 under President Aliyev's leadership, and instructed the committee to continue implementing the COP29 Action Plan and address other relevant matters.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will take place in Azerbaijan this November. This decision was made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Baku is expected to welcome approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international attendees over the two-week event.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The COP, or “Conference of the Parties,” is the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC, which has 198 member states. Unless otherwise decided, the COP convenes annually; the first COP was held in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat based in Bonn.
