Trump to suspend Section 907 amid President Aliyev’s visit to Washington
U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive document suspending Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, marking a significant shift in American policy toward Azerbaijan.
The move will take place on August 8 as part of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Washington, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The decision represents a major diplomatic achievement for Baku and is being hailed as the end of a decades-long injustice. It follows sustained dialogue and successful cooperation between Presidents Aliyev and Trump, signalling a new phase in U.S.-Azerbaijan relations.
Section 907, adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1992, banned direct government aid to Azerbaijan under the pretext of an alleged blockade against Armenia. At the time, Armenian forces were occupying Azerbaijani territories, a fact often overlooked by Washington policymakers.
Although the amendment had been regularly waived by successive U.S. administrations, the Biden–Blinken team reinstated its enforcement in recent years, using it as a political lever against Azerbaijan.
