Azerbaijan, Ukraine may cooperate with UN on mine clearance

Azerbaijan and Ukraine may cooperate with the United Nations on humanitarian demining, as Kyiv seeks to study Baku’s experience in the field, a plan discussed between Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy and Environment, Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Board of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA), and Dmytro Panshyn, Head of the Humanitarian Demining Department at Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 4th International Conference on Mine Action in Baku, which took place on 2–3 September, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

The sides also exchanged views on expanding joint projects and exchanging practical experience.

In particular, the Ukrainian side expressed interest in Azerbaijan’s experience in humanitarian demining of urban areas and preparing them for subsequent reconstruction.

They invited ANAMA to participate in the Ukraine Mine Action Conference (UMAC 2026), which will be held in Brussels, Belgium, in mid-November.

In addition, during the Baku conference, Ukraine strengthened cooperation with representatives of national mine action authorities from other countries affected by mine contamination.

The participants focused on broader use of their practical experience in developing international mechanisms, training programmes and approaches to supporting mine action.

“Ukraine is interested in strengthening cooperation with countries that have also faced mine contamination. It is important that the needs, priorities and practical experience of such countries determine the main approaches to mine action, while international partners and donors support their implementation,” Dmytro Panshyn said.
