Azerbaijan-Mexico relations based on mutual respect, presidential aide says

11 September 2026 21:03

Azerbaijan-Mexico relations are based on the principles of friendship, partnership and mutual respect, Hikmat Hajiyev, Azerbaijani Presidential Aide, has said at a reception hosted by the Embassy of Mexico in Azerbaijan in Shusha to mark Mexico’s Independence Day.

He noted that an important historical foundation for these ties was laid by the visit of the Mexican president to Baku in 1978 and the visit of Heydar Aliyev, the National Leader of the Azerbaijani people, to Mexico in 1982, when he was part of the Soviet leadership, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

In his words, these historic contacts played an important role in the subsequent development of friendship between Azerbaijan and Mexico.

Hajiyev stressed that, building on this historical legacy, Mexico was among the first countries to recognise Azerbaijan’s independence after the country restored its independence, and today, the embassies of both countries in Baku and Mexico City are operating at full capacity and carrying out important work to further develop relations based on mutual friendship.

“Today, Azerbaijan and Mexico maintain very close and strong political ties, as well as an ongoing political dialogue. Political consultations are held regularly between the two countries, and they exchange views on various issues. Azerbaijan and Mexico have coinciding positions on most of the fundamental issues on the international agenda,” he clarified.

The presidential aide further stated that Azerbaijan and Mexico support the development of interstate relations based on the principles of friendship and partnership, the norms and principles of international law, and mutual respect, as well as efforts to ensure justice and uphold the rights of states in international relations.

He particularly highlighted Mexico’s consistent and resolute position during the period when Azerbaijani territories were under occupation, saying that Mexico’s support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty had been highly appreciated by Baku and that the Azerbaijani people had always valued this position.

According to Hajiyev, the principles of mutual respect, commitment to international law, and support for territorial integrity and sovereignty form a solid foundation for friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Mexico.
