Media: US condemns Russian strike on infrastructure supplying Azerbaijani gas to Ukraine
The United States has strongly condemned a recent Russian missile strike that targeted infrastructure responsible for delivering Azerbaijani natural gas to Ukraine, calling the attack “unacceptable.”
“Russia needs to stop immediately. The devastating human toll of this war is precisely why President Trump is committed to peace. The death and destruction must stop,” a US State Department spokesperson said in a response to Trend News Agency, Caliber.Az reports.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy reported on August 6 that Russian forces carried out a drone strike on a key compressor station located in the Odesa region, near the Ukrainian-Romanian border. The station, operated by Ukraine’s gas transmission system operator, plays a crucial role in the functioning of the Trans-Balkan route, which has recently begun transporting Azerbaijani gas to Ukraine.
“The equipment responsible for ensuring the functioning of this route was attacked by dozens of strike drones. Specialists are currently on site to assess the damage,” the ministry said in a statement.
The facility also supports deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States via Greek terminals, highlighting its strategic importance for Ukraine’s diversified energy supply.
The attack comes just days after the Naftogaz Group signed its first agreement with SOCAR Energy Ukraine, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR, for the purchase of Azerbaijani gas.
Gas transportation through the Trans-Balkan corridor — passing through Bulgaria and Romania into Ukraine—officially began in test mode earlier this year.
