Azerbaijan backs Türkiye’s COP31 presidency on climate finance, says official

06 September 2026 10:06

Azerbaijan backs Türkiye’s COP31 presidency in efforts to achieve concrete results on climate finance, Azerbaijani Presidential Representative for Climate Issues Mukhtar Babayev said.

Babaev made the remarks in a post on X, following the “Istanbul Climate Finance Summit,” where participants discussed the need to bridge the growing gap between climate ambitions and their implementation, accelerate financing, and strengthen resilience as the impacts of climate change intensify, Caliber.Az reports.

“Building on the landmark COP29 outcomes in Baku and the Baku to Belem Roadmap towards USD 1.3 trillion, presented at COP30 in Belem, our focus must now be on turning commitments into real financial flows and implementation,” Babaev said.

According to him, as COP31 in Antalya approaches, Türkiye’s commitment to achieving concrete objectives has been welcomed.

Azerbaijan was represented at the Istanbul Climate Finance Summit on September 4 by Presidential Representative for Climate Issues Mukhtar Babayev and Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev, who serve as members of the Advisory Board of Türkiye’s COP31 Presidency.

The discussions come ahead of COP31, which Türkiye will host in Antalya from November 9 to 20, 2026. The conference is expected to build on recent progress in climate finance by focusing on implementation and efforts to turn existing commitments into concrete financial flows and action.
