Czech football derby cancelled as leading team's fans invade field before title win VIDEO

11 May 2026 00:03

A crucial football derby between SK Slavia Prague and AC Sparta Prague was abandoned this weekend after home supporters stormed the pitch just seconds before their club appeared set to secure the Czech league title.

The two biggest clubs in the Czech capital were locked in a dramatic showdown at the leading team's home stadium that would likely have crowned Slavia champions had their fans not disrupted the match, sporting media outlets report.

In the seventh minute of extra added time, with Slavia leading 3-2, hundreds of supporters invaded the field carrying lit flares and pyrotechnics, forcing both teams to retreat to the dressing rooms.

Reports said two Sparta players were attacked during the chaos, with authorities later confirming that Sparta goalkeeper Jakub Surovcik was among those targeted.

He was struck by a flare thrown by home fans and condemned the incident in a statement posted on social media.

“For someone to run up and threaten me to my face during the match, accompanied by an assault, is absolutely unacceptable, and I will be pursuing this through legal channels,” the goalkeeper said.

Media outlets reported, that Sparta players feared for their safety and later left the stadium aboard the team bus under police escort.

Match officials ultimately decided to abandon the fixture before the final whistle could be blown.

Slavia Prague chairman Jaroslav Tvrdik also strongly condemned the scenes caused bu his club's fans afterward.

“This is probably the greatest disgrace I have experienced in 11 years at the club. [...] I apologize to all the normal fans who stayed in the stands; I apologize to all viewers in front of their screens. It's a disgrace; we must live with it,” he wrote.

Tvrdik also announced the immediate closure of the stadium’s North Stand, insisting it would remain shut until all those responsible are identified. He pledged the club’s “maximum co-operation” with police and investigators.

“We will hand over all camera footage, results of the evaluation by the organising service, and identification data of ticket and season ticket holders from the North Stand,” he said, adding that the identified perpetrators would receive a lifetime ban from entering Fortuna Arena.

The abandoned match could now have major consequences for Slavia. The club faces disciplinary proceedings that may result in a 3-0 defeat being awarded against them, which would cut their lead at the top of the league to five points with three rounds remaining.

Slavia could also face multi-million crown fines from the League Football Association disciplinary committee and potentially be ordered to close Fortuna Arena for future matches.
