Earthquake strikes China, leaving nine injured, thousands displaced
A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Longxi County in Dingxi City, northwest China’s Gansu Province, at 5:49 a.m. local time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km, with tremors felt in nearby counties including Zhangxian, Weiyuan, Lintao, and Wushan, Caliber.Az reports per Chinese media.
As of midday, nine people were reported injured, 4,328 houses damaged, and over 7,800 residents relocated in Longxi and Zhangxian counties, the Dingxi quake relief command center confirmed. Rescue operations are underway, with emergency teams deployed to the worst-affected areas, including Hualin and Majiaqu villages.
Local roads remain open despite debris, and firefighters and police are directing traffic and conducting safety checks. Residents reported structural damage to homes and courtyard walls, though no major collapses have been confirmed.
Hospitals in Longxi have admitted six injured individuals, five of whom are hospitalised in stable condition, according to Ma Hongbin, director of orthopedics at the No. 2 People’s Hospital.
The China Earthquake Administration has launched a level-III emergency response, while the Ministry of Emergency Management and the State Council earthquake relief office initiated a level-IV response. National and local rescue teams are delivering aid, setting up tents, and distributing relief supplies in an organized effort to support those affected.
