Eastern Taiwan rocked by 5.9 earthquake, no tsunami or damage reported
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Taiwan, a statement by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.
The seismic event was recorded approximately 140 kilometres southeast of the city of Keelung, with the hypocenter located at a depth of 105 kilometres beneath the Earth's surface, Caliber.Az reports.
The tremor was classified as intermediate in depth, which typically reduces the likelihood of severe surface damage despite its magnitude.
As of the latest reports, there have been no confirmed casualties or structural damage resulting from the quake. Authorities have also stated that no tsunami warning has been issued in connection with the seismic activity.
The region lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone where earthquakes are relatively frequent due to tectonic plate movements. Taiwan’s emergency services continue to monitor the situation, although no disruptions to infrastructure or essential services have been reported.
