Egypt sends 650 tons of humanitarian aid to Turkish quake victims

23 February 2023 09:41

An Egyptian ship loaded with humanitarian aid arrived at Mersin port on February 22 for the victims of two deadly earthquakes that struck Türkiye on February 6.

The Navy vessel carries 650 tons of aid for the quake victims, including tents, beds, covers, heaters, foodstuff and medical and hygiene supplies.

“Egypt stands in solidarity with Türkiye in these hard times,” Egyptian Chargé d’Affaires, Amr El Hamamy, told Anadolu.

"This ship is an Egyptian [message] of love to the Turkish people," he said.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi made a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan following the earthquakes during which he offered his condolences to the quake victims.

At least 42,310 people have been killed by two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye on February 6, the country’s disaster management agency said on February 21.

The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes, centred in the Kahramanmaras province, affected more than 13 million people across 11 provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, Elazig and Sanliurfa.
