Armenia, EU discuss accession path, South Caucasus stability at Tirana summit
On the sidelines of the 6th European Political Community Summit held in Tirana, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss Armenia’s European integration and the peace process in the South Caucasus.
During the meeting, Pashinyan reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening ties with the European Union, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
According to a statement released by the Armenian government’s press office, “Nikol Pashinyan highly appreciated the European Union’s consistent support for the reforms being implemented in Armenia and emphasised the Armenian government’s readiness to continue strengthening cooperation with the EU, ensuring a new and effective stage of partnership.”
Costa and von der Leyen welcomed Armenia’s recent legislative step to begin the process of joining the European Union. They described the move as an important milestone and expressed support for deepening bilateral relations. Both European leaders also underlined the significance of accelerating the process of visa liberalisation between Armenia and the EU.
In addition to the integration agenda, the European officials welcomed the agreement reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the text of a draft peace treaty. The Armenian government’s statement added, “They emphasized the EU’s readiness to continue supporting the peace process and contributing to long-term stability in the region.”
