Georgia detains two Iranian nationals over alleged migrant smuggling VIDEO
Georgian authorities have detained two Iranian nationals on suspicion of attempting to illegally transport a migrant across the country’s state border, the Georgian Interior Ministry said.
According to a statement published by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia on Facebook, officers from the Patrol Police Department arrested the two men at the Sarp Border Checkpoint, Caliber.Az reports.
Investigators allege that one of the suspects attempted to secretly transport the other across the border in a truck, bypassing official border control procedures at the checkpoint.
Both suspects were detained on the territory of the border crossing facility, authorities said.
The investigation is being conducted under articles of the Georgian Criminal Code related to illegal border crossing and migrant smuggling. If convicted, the suspects could face up to five years in prison.
