Kremlin backs Putin-Trump summit as “essential” for global stability

16 May 2025 15:03

A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump is certainly necessary, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

During a briefing, Peskov emphasized the importance of such a summit, acknowledging that it would require extensive preparation to be effective, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

"Such a meeting is certainly necessary," Peskov stated, underlining that it would be crucial for fostering dialogue between the two leaders. However, he also made it clear that such high-level talks must be meticulously planned to ensure their success.

"The meeting must be prepared, and it must be productive," Peskov added, stressing that any face-to-face encounter between the leaders of Russia and the United States cannot be rushed. He further explained that a summit of this magnitude requires thorough expert consultations and intense discussions well in advance.

"Summit meetings are always preceded by expert talks, consultations, and long, tense preparations, especially if we are talking about a summit meeting between the President of the Russian Federation and the United States of America," Peskov said.

"Such a meeting is undoubtedly essential—not only from the standpoint of bilateral Russian-American relations, but also in terms of facilitating a substantive, high-level dialogue on pressing international issues and regional challenges, including, of course, the ongoing crisis surrounding Ukraine," the Kremlin spokesman emphasized.

His remarks followed recent comments by US President Trump, who asserted that "nothing will happen" regarding a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict until he meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed this sentiment, stating that a direct meeting between the two leaders represents the only viable opportunity to resolve the conflict. However, Rubio also noted that no date or location for such a summit has yet been determined.
