Azerbaijan hosts secret Israel-Syria-Türkiye summit in breakthrough peace effort
Israel is currently holding secret negotiations with Syria’s new government as part of a broader peace initiative facilitated by the United Arab Emirates.
One of the key meetings in this process took place recently in Azerbaijan, where Major General Oded Basiuk, head of the Operations Directorate of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) General Staff, held discussions with representatives closely associated with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Сaliber.Az reports, citing Israel’s Channel 12.
Turkish officials were also present at the meeting, indicating Türkiye’s active participation in the evolving talks.
According to sources, the discussions focused on the potential inclusion of Syria in regional diplomatic frameworks, including the Abraham Accords, which have already normalised relations between Israel and several Arab states. The talks also addressed the possibility of easing long-standing tensions between Israel and Türkiye, two countries that have experienced repeated diplomatic rifts in recent years.
Israeli officials have described the initiative as being in its preliminary stages, but acknowledged that it presents a rare opportunity to influence the future regional order through dialogue and multilateral cooperation.
