Iran proposes new mechanism to manage ties with Iraq

Iranian authorities have sent messages to the leadership of Iraq’s Coordination Framework urging it to resolve internal disputes over the disarmament of pro-Iranian armed groups through peaceful means and avoid armed confrontation, Asharq Al-Awsat reported, citing informed sources in Baghdad.

According to the sources, Tehran has proposed establishing special committees to discuss the mechanisms, scope and conditions for transferring weapons to the Iraqi state, including the possibility of exchanging the weapons. The approach is intended to help monitor compliance with agreed deadlines while avoiding an escalation of tensions with the Iraqi government or the United States.

The report also said Mohsen Qomi, deputy head of the Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader’s international relations department, made a secret visit to Baghdad. He briefly attended a meeting of the leadership of Iraq’s Shiite Coordination Framework, where he conveyed Tehran’s recommendations on how to respond to forthcoming political changes and the transformation of Iraq’s security architecture.

The primary purpose of his visit was to establish an updated mechanism for cooperation between Iran and Iraq.
