The individuals were reportedly wanted in connection with offences related to the "active structure" of the FETÖ terrorist organisation.
These include maintaining contact with senior figures in the organisation via public payphones, providing financial support to the group, and disseminating FETÖ propaganda through social media accounts.
Numerous organisational documents and digital materials were also seized during the raids.
Note that, the Fethullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETÖ) is a clandestine network that was led by Fethullah Gülen, a cleric who lived in self-exile in the United States before he died in 2024.
Once a close ally of Türkiye’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the Gülen movement fell out with the Turkish government in the early 2010s. Ankara formally designated it a terrorist organisation in 2016, accusing it of infiltrating state institutions — particularly the judiciary, police, and military — over several decades.
FETÖ orchestrated the failed coup attempt on 15 July 2016, during which rogue military factions killed over 250 people and attempted to topple President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The government claims that Gülen loyalists planned the coup from within the armed forces and used encrypted messaging apps like ByLock to coordinate.
Following the coup attempt, Türkiye launched a wide-ranging purge of suspected FETÖ members from the civil service, judiciary, military, and academia, arresting tens of thousands and dismissing more than 100,000 public employees.
