Georgia’s ancient qvevri tradition wins gold in Germany

08 September 2026 21:18

Two Georgian wines produced using the traditional qvevri wine-making method have won gold medals at the MUNDUS VINI Summer Tasting 2026 in Germany.

The awards went to “Vivi Rkatsiteli Qvevri” and “Vivi Saperavi Qvevri,” produced by Georgian winery Wine Kakheti, Caliber.Az reports, citing Sputnik Georgia.

“We are pleased that the international jury awarded both of our wines gold medals. This result is another important recognition of the quality and potential of Georgian qvevri wine,” the company said.

MUNDUS VINI is an international wine competition where wines are assessed through blind tasting by oenologists, sommeliers and masters of wine from various countries. Entries are judged on aroma, taste, balance and structure without revealing their brand or producer.

Georgia has an 8,000-year-old winemaking tradition, with the qvevri method recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2013. The country is also home to hundreds of indigenous grape varieties, including Rkatsiteli and Saperavi.
