Moscow ready for Ukraine talks, top diplomat says

08 September 2026 15:27

Russia remains ready to negotiate on Ukraine, provided the talks are based on an understanding of the root causes of the conflict and aimed at reaching agreements to address them, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

Speaking at a press conference, Lavrov referred to the recent meeting in Moscow between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

“As for the issue of negotiations on Ukraine, if you mean the latest meeting in Moscow between President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin and President [of the United States Donald] Trump’s envoys [Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner], this meeting was covered in sufficient detail both in broadcasts at the beginning of these negotiations and in comments subsequently made by representatives of the Kremlin.

If we take the main point, it is necessary first and foremost to hold negotiations, and we are always ready for them, based on an understanding of the root causes and on reaching an agreement to eliminate the root causes of the current Ukrainian crisis, which was created by the West, primarily by the previous US administration and the European Union, as well as NATO members, who are still trying to achieve, as they put it, Russia’s defeat and support Ukraine in every possible way,” the minister underlined.
