Elon Musk envisions future where humans can upload their minds into robots
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has suggested that within the next two decades, it may be possible for humans to upload their minds into robots, preserving their memories, consciousness, and identity in a digital form.
Speaking on a podcast with artificial intelligence researcher Lex Fridman, Musk discussed the long-term goals of his brain–computer interface company, Neuralink. He said that future advances in the technology could allow people to transfer or “download” their memories into a new body, potentially achieving a form of digital immortality, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
“If it’s extremely safe, and you can have superhuman abilities—let’s say you can upload your memories, so you wouldn’t lose them—then I think probably a lot of people would choose to have it,” Musk said.
Musk explained that by combining Neuralink’s brain–machine interface with Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, a digital version of a person could one day live on physically.
While Neuralink remains in the early stages of testing its implantable brain chips, Musk believes the technology could eventually enable a direct link between human brains and machines.
Neuralink is currently conducting human trials focused on restoring movement in paralyzed patients.
