Energy tech giant SLB explores geothermal potential in Karabakh
Energy technology company Schlumberger (SLB) is actively exploring the geothermal potential of Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region, SLB Managing Director for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkmenistan Jodi Wood said.
Speaking on the second day of Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW2025), Wood highlighted the company's collaboration with SOCAR Green, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan’s state oil company, in assessing renewable energy opportunities within Karabakh’s designated green energy zone, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
"We are working closely with SOCAR Green to assess geothermal opportunities in Karabakh's green energy zone," said Wood. "As many of you know, the area has significant volcanic activity and hot springs. Water temperatures can reach 100–150 degrees Celsius. This means there's potential for traditional steam energy or geothermal heating for homes, industrial facilities, and other applications. So yes, there are promising opportunities here in Azerbaijan."
In addition to geothermal energy, Wood said SLB is also considering introducing its global carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology in Azerbaijan.
"Carbon capture and storage is critically important," she said. "We're working to understand how we can advance this using existing wells and our knowledge of subsurface processes. At present, we're running three projects worldwide. So, we may also bring this technology to Azerbaijan to further its development."
SLB, formerly known as Schlumberger, has increasingly pivoted toward low-carbon and sustainable energy technologies as part of its global strategy to support energy transition efforts.
