Estonia receives six more South Korean self-propelled howitzers
Six new K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers manufactured in South Korea have been delivered to Estonia, the Estonian Center for Defence Investments (RKIK) confirmed.
As with previous deliveries, the howitzers are being adapted for use in Estonia by the local company GoCraft. Modifications include adjustments for local climate conditions, installation of advanced communication systems, and additional storage compartments for soldiers’ equipmentç Caliber.Az reports, citing Estonian media.
Once upgraded, the vehicles will be deployed to the artillery regiment of the Estonian Defence Forces division. Another six units are expected to arrive next year, bringing Estonia’s total purchase of 36 K9 howitzers from South Korean manufacturer Hanwha Defence to full delivery. The contract is valued at approximately €120 million.
These self-propelled howitzers will also equip two infantry brigades of the Estonian Armed Forces. The Estonian Defence Forces’ instructional centre has already trained the first crews to operate the new artillery systems.
In 2021, Estonia signed a framework agreement with GoCraft to modernize 24 of the K9 howitzers. The modernization program includes the installation of communication and control systems, painting, replacement of the fire extinguishing system, adaptation of the electrical system, and the integration of other specialized devices.
