EU extends sanctions against Russia for six months

17 July 2024 16:33

The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union (EU) has agreed to extend the bloc's economic sanctions against Russia for another six months. These sanctions were initially imposed in 2014.

EU diplomatic source confirmed the decision, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

"EU ambassadors have agreed on a new extension of EU economic sanctions against Russia for six months," the source stated. This decision is expected to be formally approved on July 22 during a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

The restrictive measures were last extended in late January, set to remain in place until July 31, 2024.

Sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia are part of a broader strategy to respond to Russia's actions in Ukraine and Crimea, beginning with the annexation of Crimea in 2014. These sanctions have evolved over time and typically include measures targeting individuals, entities, and sectors of the Russian economy.

The sanctions have garnered varying levels of support among EU member states, reflecting different national interests and economic ties with Russia. Critics argue about the economic costs and potential diplomatic repercussions of prolonged sanctions.

Sanctions are typically renewed every six months, subject to review and consensus among EU member states.
