Belgium pledges air, naval and training support for Ukraine’s future security
European partners are continuing to define the future security architecture for Ukraine, discussing concrete military and political support mechanisms within the international coalition working on post-war arrangements.
According to Ukrainian media, this follows a social media statement by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, who said Belgium is prepared to contribute to securing peace in Ukraine once the war ends.
De Wever stated that these issues were examined during the meeting of the “coalition of the willing” held in Paris. He described the discussions as productive and noted that Brussels intends to take on its share of the international responsibility to help maintain stability in Ukraine after the conflict.
He underscored that Belgium’s participation will be concentrated in areas where the country has proven capabilities. In particular, he highlighted the deployment of air and naval forces and the provision of training as fields where Belgium can offer tangible and meaningful support.
The Belgian prime minister also stressed the indispensable role of American leadership. He said that the broader coalition’s efforts will rely on the United States as a stable pillar of support.
According to De Wever, future monitoring of the security situation is expected to be conducted under US leadership, with the objective of deterring any renewed Russian aggression and promoting long-term regional stability.
Germany has similarly expressed readiness to contribute to maintaining a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, but has ruled out sending its troops to Ukrainian territory. Following the Paris meeting, Chancellor Friedrich Merz clarified that Berlin’s approach differs from that of London and Paris: Germany is considering involvement within broader support structures and international security mechanisms, but its participation does not entail the automatic deployment of German military forces.
During the Paris talks, Ukrainian and US representatives within the “coalition of the willing” reached an understanding on specific steps for implementing and supervising a ceasefire. However, the advancement of these arrangements remains contingent on Russia’s stance. Moscow has not yet indicated whether it is prepared to comply with the proposed steps.
