EU launches connectivity agenda platform to boost Middle Corridor investment
The European Union has launched the Connectivity Agenda Platform, a new coordination framework for transport, energy, and digital projects along the Middle Corridor linking China, Central Asia, the South Caucasus, Türkiye, and Europe.
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos announced the initiative at a conference marking the platform’s launch, saying it aims to elevate cooperation among countries along the route by integrating individual initiatives into a unified strategy for regional connectivity, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
"The Connectivity Agenda Platform will allow us to link individual initiatives and develop a common vision for developing connectivity in the wider region. It will also help shape a portfolio of priority projects that truly make a difference," Kos said.
The platform is also intended to improve access to financing by bringing together governments, international financial institutions, and private investors under a shared investment framework.
The Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), is seen by the EU as a strategic alternative to traditional Europe–Asia trade routes. However, its development continues to face constraints, including infrastructure gaps and lengthy transit times. According to the EU, shipping cargo from the China–Kazakhstan border to Romania can currently take up to 45 days.
"We want to reduce this time to 15 days-this is significantly faster than shipping by sea to Europe," Kos stated.
She identified missing rail and road links, capacity limitations, and infrastructure bottlenecks as key challenges, alongside differing border procedures, incompatible systems, and administrative delays.
To address these issues, the EU plans to invest in modernising transport infrastructure, digitalising customs processes, and harmonising regulations across the region.
Kos added that projects already signed under the initiative, with EU participation, provide for more than €80 million in European funding and could help mobilise over €2 billion in total investment for transport, energy, and digital infrastructure projects.
