EU nominates new Special Representative for South Caucasus and Georgia
The EU Political and Security Committee has approved the candidacy of Magdalena Grono as the new European Union (EU) Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Georgia, succeeding Toivo Klaar.
Her appointment is pending official confirmation by the EU Council in the coming days, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.
In May, Grono was appointed chief diplomatic adviser to European Council President Charles Michel. She previously served as senior foreign policy adviser to European Council President Charles Michel.
Toivo Klaar has held the position of EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus since November 13, 2017.
His role has involved diplomatic efforts, mediation, and engagement with regional stakeholders to address key issues such as territorial conflicts and political developments in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.
Klaar has served prominently in European diplomacy, including roles as the Head of Mission for the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia and various positions within the European External Action Service (EEAS).
He has a background in Estonian civil service and holds a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
