EU poised to unlock first Ukraine military funding tranche next week
The European Commission expects to disburse the first tranche of military financing to Ukraine as early as next week under a €90 billion program planned for 2026–2027, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said.
She made remarks ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers, responding to a question from Ukrainian journalists about when the funds under the €90 billion program would be disbursed.
“I hope that in the next week we will be able to disburse the first payments,” Marta Kos noted.
The €90 billion program is part of the European Union’s broader long-term financial framework designed to sustain Ukraine’s macroeconomic stability and defence capacity in 2026–2027.
It is structured as a large-scale, multi-year assistance mechanism financed through EU capital market borrowing, backed by guarantees from member states to ensure predictable funding flows.
A key feature of the scheme is its phased disbursement model, which allows funds to be released in tranches depending on Ukraine’s financial needs and compliance with agreed policy conditions.
This approach is intended to reduce short-term funding volatility while maintaining continuous support for both state budget needs and defence-related expenditures.
