EU prepares “military Schengen” for rapid troop, equipment movement Amid tensions with Russia
The European Union is preparing to accelerate the transport of troops, weapons, ammunition, and the evacuation of wounded soldiers as part of contingency planning for a potential conflict with Russia, Caliber.Az reports, citing RMF24.
According to the publication, the European Commission is set to present a document on EU military mobility on November 19, outlining a comprehensive framework for the efficient large-scale movement of military equipment, personnel, and supplies across EU member states.
EU officials refer to the plan as a “military Schengen”, drawing parallels with the free movement of people across internal EU borders. The concept envisions creating a European military mobility zone with harmonised regulations, standardised procedures, and a network of designated land corridors, airports, and seaports to ensure the rapid deployment of forces in the event of war or a major crisis.
Currently, cross-border military transport often faces delays of several days due to transit approval requirements. The new framework aims to streamline and digitise customs logistics, introduce an emergency transport mechanism for urgent military operations, and encourage resource-sharing and solidarity among EU states.
The European Commission is also exploring the creation of a dual-use “solidarity fleet”, comprising specialised railcars and locomotives deployable across the continent as needed. This common pool would enhance Europe’s collective readiness for military logistics and reinforce defence integration across the bloc.
