Media: EU takes action to ease tensions in strained US relationship
In a recent article, Politico unveils that the EU's leadership is actively working to reduce tensions in its increasingly strained relationship with the US.
To address this, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič, is set to embark on another visit to Washington.
Björn Seibert, head of the Cabinet of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will also be joining the trip. The visit comes after Brussels decided to postpone its response to the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum by US President Donald Trump. The EU's aim is to ease the growing tensions in trade relations with the US, with this trip marking another effort toward that goal.
Olof Gill, the EU Commission spokesperson for Economic Security, Trade, Financial Services, UK Relations, and Customs, emphasised that both sides must make every effort to avoid imposing harmful tariffs and to strengthen the already robust trade and economic relationship between the EU and the US. He highlighted that the trade relationship between the two remains the strongest in the world.
Earlier, the EU considered imposing retaliatory tariffs on US imports worth 21.5 billion euros. However, last week the European Commission decided to delay these measures until early April, giving Brussels more time for negotiations with Washington.
In addition, EU officials are working to convince skeptical countries, including France and Italy, to adopt a unified position on the issue. The visit by Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič to Washington will be his second since President Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
On March 25, Šefčovič is scheduled to meet with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative-nominee Jamieson Greer to continue discussions aimed at de-escalating the trade tensions.
