EU unlocks €90 billion Ukraine aid, tightens sanctions on Russia
The European Union has approved a major financial and sanctions package aimed at reinforcing support for Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia.
European Council President António Costa announced the measures on X, describing them as part of a coordinated EU strategy focused on military, financial and political backing for Kyiv.
The package includes the unblocking of €90 billion in financial assistance for Ukraine over the 2026–2027 period, intended to support both budgetary needs and military resilience amid the ongoing war.
At the same time, EU member states agreed on the 20th sanctions package against Russia, targeting further restrictions designed to limit Moscow’s ability to sustain its war effort.
In a joint framing of the decision, EU officials said the bloc’s approach is built on two parallel objectives: strengthening Ukraine’s capacity to defend itself while tightening economic and political pressure on Russia.
“The EU’s strategy to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine rests on two pillars: strengthening Ukraine; increasing pressure on Russia,” the announcement stated.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy has said that the European Union has unblocked a €90 billion support package for Ukraine over the next two years. The funding is aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities, increasing resilience, and ensuring the government can continue to meet its social obligations during the ongoing war.
He said the first tranche of funds could be received as early as May or June. The financial assistance will be directed towards the production and procurement of weapons, as well as preparations for the winter period, including support for energy systems and critical infrastructure.
Zelenskyy also stressed the importance of maintaining sustained sanctions pressure on Russia. He further highlighted the development of a new cooperation format known as “Drone Deals”, which has reportedly seen success in regions such as the Middle East and the Persian Gulf.
