EU welcomes Armenian election outcome, claims external pressure
The European Union has congratulated the citizens of Armenia following the country’s parliamentary elections, praising voter participation and reaffirming support for the country’s closer ties with Europe.
In a statement issued by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on behalf of the EU, she said the elections demonstrated Armenia’s “firm commitment to democracy, peace and enhanced cooperation in the region as well as closer ties with Europe,” Caliber.Az reports.
Citing preliminary findings from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR), the EU noted that while the campaign was “highly polarised,” the vote was generally well organised.
“The elections were managed in an inclusive manner, offered clear political alternatives, and were well organised, under a sound legal framework,” the statement said.
However, she also pointed to what it described as external pressure on the electoral process.
“The electoral campaign and the voting took place in a context of unprecedented interference, pressure and persistent hybrid attacks from Russia, including via economic coercion measures that have sought to undermine the democratic process and incite polarisation,” Kallas said.
Despite these concerns, the EU representative said the outcome reflected "democratic resilience in Armenia."
“Nevertheless, the elections reflect Armenia’s democratic resilience and progress on its reform path,” the statement added, noting what it described as the Armenian public’s commitment to “European values, peaceful political participation, and the pursuit of a stable, secure and prosperous future.”
Referring to preliminary results, she said it “takes note” of indications that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party is in the lead. It called on political actors to respect the results and legal procedures.
“We call on all political actors to respect the outcome of the vote, democratic procedures and make use of legal mechanisms to address any electoral complaints,” the statement said.
The EU reaffirmed its readiness to deepen cooperation with Armenia’s next government.
“The EU stands firmly with Armenia and its people and remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Armenia on its democratic path,” it said, adding that it looks forward to working with the future parliament to advance reforms, economic growth, and regional stability.
