Europe braces for potential energy crisis as Iran conflict intensifies
European countries are preparing for a possible energy crisis and rising prices amid escalating conflict in the Middle East, according to foreign media.
The European Commission is exploring emergency measures similar to those adopted after the outbreak of the Ukraine war. Short-term actions under consideration include monitoring temperatures in climate control systems, encouraging remote work, and potential fuel rationing and restrictions on air travel.
The Commission stated that there is currently no threat to energy supplies, but Brent crude price increases have already impacted gas and oil costs across Europe. Since the conflict began, the EU’s energy import expenses have risen by €14 billion, according to the Commission.
Experts warn that the Middle East conflict could also affect fertiliser supplies, potentially impacting crop yields and triggering a global food crisis. Concerns have also been raised over possible disruptions to medical supply chains.
