Europe drafts NATO functioning model without US involvement — WSJ
European countries are working on a plan for the possible functioning of NATO without the involvement of the United States.
European officials are discussing the creation of a so-called “European NATO” and are seeking to increase Europe’s representation in key leadership positions within the alliance, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports.
Measures are also being considered to gradually replace US military equipment with European alternatives.
The outlet noted that work on such plans began in 2025 and intensified after statements by US President Donald Trump regarding possible US territorial claims over Greenland.
As part of the initiative, Europe also plans to expand weapons production in areas where it lags behind the United States, including anti-submarine systems, space-based reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities, and aerial refuelling systems.
