European Commission allocates extra €50 million to Moldova for reforms
The European Commission has allocated an additional €50 million to Moldova to support the country’s ongoing reforms.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made the announcement via social media, stating, "Today we have contributed €50 million to support reforms and economic stability," Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
She highlighted Moldova's efforts to reform its justice system as part of its journey towards EU membership. "Assessing the integrity of judges and prosecutors is essential to ensure the rule of law," von der Leyen said, adding that discussions have been held regarding a roadmap to expedite the vetting process for judges. The EU has also increased its support for this initiative to €10 million.
Von der Leyen further emphasized that the EU is looking forward to opening a crucial phase of Moldova's EU accession negotiations in 2025.
In a referendum held on October 20, Moldova saw 50.4 per cent of voters support constitutional amendments aimed at joining the European Union.
