European Commission approves funding to enhance border security Amid rising migration threats
The European Commission (EC) has approved a significant allocation of funds aimed at improving border control systems across several European countries.
Estonia is set to receive €19.4 million, Latvia €17 million, Lithuania €15.4 million, Finland €50 million, Poland €52 million, and Norway €16.4 million to strengthen their border control systems and improve security measures, Caliber.Az reports via Estonian media.
The funding for Estonia will be specifically used to enhance the control system at its border with Russia. The funds will be directed toward the modernization of electronic surveillance equipment and the improvement of telecommunication networks at the border.
The funds will be used to modernize electronic surveillance equipment, enhance telecommunication networks, deploy mobile detection systems, and prevent drone attacks, all aimed at providing real-time situational awareness and increasing the mobility of border patrols.
The Interior Ministry highlighted that Russia and Belarus are using migration as a political tool to destabilize European countries and undermine the integrity of the Schengen Area. Illegal border crossings between the EU and Belarus have risen by 66 per cent in 2024 compared to the previous year.
