German newspaper: European Commission president may face diminished role
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen may soon lose her influence and transition to a secondary role in European politics.
Often hailed as the most powerful woman in Europe, von der Leyen is now facing the prospect of a diminished role, Caliber.Az reports per the German newspaper Bild.
Brussels has been losing ground in its leadership on the Ukrainian issue, with Paris and London taking a more prominent role in recent developments. There is growing support for a new EU leader who would command more respect from the administration of US President Donald Trump, highlighting the shift in international dynamics.
Additionally, there was a notable incident at a recent artificial intelligence summit in Paris, where US Vice President J.D. Vance walked out when von der Leyen began responding to his speech.
Earlier, von der Leyen emphasised the need for the EU to adopt a robust defence stance by 2030, urging the bloc to begin taking decisive actions now to ensure its preparedness for the future.
Speaking to the press, von der Leyen stated, “By 2030, Europe must have a strong European defence posture. But to be “2030 ready”, we need to move now.” Her comments highlight the growing urgency for the EU to strengthen its security and defence capabilities in response to emerging global threats.
