European Parliament president urges EU to continue trade talks with US under Trump
Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, has called on the European Union to maintain trade negotiations with the United States after Donald Trump assumes the presidency in January 2025.
Metsola emphasized the importance of continuing dialogue with the US, citing Trump’s known interest in forging agreements, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
"It is well known that President-elect Trump is a man interested in agreements. Therefore, we must continue to work with our American partners and pursue the realization of common interests," she stated. However, she also cautioned that Europe must be prepared to respond if necessary.
Trump defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the November 5 election. With Republicans gaining control of the US Senate, Trump’s inauguration is scheduled for January 20, 2025.
During his campaign, Trump pledged to reduce the US trade deficit by imposing tariffs on imports from the EU and incentivizing companies to relocate their factories to the United States.
Brussels is concerned that Trump's fulfillment of these promises, particularly regarding Germany's automobile industry, could spell disaster for several of the EU's largest economies.
