Ex-Georgian MP released on bail after alleged attack on Azerbaijani official
Former Georgian parliamentarian Aleko Elisashvili has been released on bail after being accused of attacking Ali Babaev, the head of the National Congress of Azerbaijanis in Georgia.
The Tbilisi City Court set bail at 4,000 lari (approximately $1,400) for Elisashvili, who faces charges of inflicting bodily harm on Babaev, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
The court partially accepted the prosecution’s request to reduce Elisashvili’s detention, with the initial petition for bail set at 5,000 lari ($1,700).
Elisashvili was detained two days later following an incident on December 2 in Tbilisi, during which he allegedly insulted Babaev both verbally and physically.
The former parliamentarian is charged under a politically motivated persecution statute, which carries a sentence of up to three years in prison.
Following the court’s decision, Elisashvili was released from custody.
