Expectations high for COP29 in Baku Preparations in full swing
The stage is set for what promises to be a historic event as preparations for COP29, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, are underway in Baku, Azerbaijan.
With a record number of participants gathering at the annual Bonn conference in June, anticipation for COP29 has reached unprecedented levels.
Deputy Foreign Minister Yalcin Rafiyev, serving as the lead negotiator for the 29th session of the UN Conference of the Parties (COP29) on Climate Change, expressed confidence in the success of the upcoming conference. He emphasized the significance of the ongoing negotiations surrounding preliminary draft documents to be adopted in Baku. Parallel sessions are being conducted by Azerbaijan and other participating states, alongside major events addressing topical climate issues in the plenary hall, AZERTAC reports.
Rafiyev highlighted the international community's high expectations for COP29, asserting that there is widespread belief that it will be among the most successful COPs ever convened. One focal point of discussions will be climate finance, with attention given to revisiting the financial target set in Copenhagen in 2009. After 15 years, new calculations will determine the updated target, a topic of considerable importance in Azerbaijan's negotiations with its counterparts and partners.
The Bonn Conference holds particular significance for Azerbaijan, serving as a crucial platform for shaping the agenda and priorities for COP29.
