Azerbaijan joins NATO Maritime Security Centre as flag raised in Istanbul PHOTO
On June 2, the national flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan was officially raised at the NATO Maritime Security Centre of Excellence in Istanbul, Türkiye, during a formal ceremony marking Azerbaijan’s inclusion in the centre.
The ceremony featured remarks by Captain 1st Rank Mehmet Cengiz Ekren, the head of the centre.
In his address, quoted by the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry, Ekren underscored the strategic importance of maritime security in facilitating global trade, fostering international cooperation, and upholding collective security, per Caliber.Az.
He stressed its growing relevance in today’s interconnected world.
He also highlighted the importance of Azerbaijan becoming the fifth member of the centre, joining the ranks of existing member states Türkiye, Greece, Portugal, and Romania. Ekren noted that Azerbaijan’s accession reflects its dedication to strengthening maritime security in close coordination with its partners.
Captain Ekren expressed confidence in Lieutenant Commander Murad Muradov Eldar oglu, who was appointed earlier this year to serve as the education staff officer (EDU/007) at the centre for a three-year term. He stated his belief that Muradov would make effective use of the knowledge and experience gained during his assignment upon his return to Azerbaijan.
The event concluded with a ceremonial presentation of a commemorative gift to the Azerbaijani officer.
