Russian envoy flags Finland’s rapid militarisation plans
Finland is actively stepping up its military capabilities, according to Russian Ambassador to Helsinki, Pavel Kuznetsov, who spoke to Russia's state media RIA Novosti.
Kuznetsov highlighted Finland’s withdrawal from the international convention banning anti-personnel mines as part of a broader strategy toward rapid militarization. Finnish authorities plan to increase defence spending to 3% of GDP by 2029 and 5% by 2035.
Starting January 1, 2026, the age limit for service in Finland’s Armed Forces reserve will rise to 65, potentially allowing the recruitment of up to one million reservists by 2031. The country is also expanding its training grounds and shooting ranges to support this buildup.
According to Kuznetsov, Helsinki is modernising its military arsenal, strengthening naval capabilities, upgrading its fleet of multi-role fighter jets, and preparing for a significant overhaul of its land forces.
