First 100 billion cubic metres of Russian gas sent to China under historic deal
Gazprom has delivered the first 100 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas to China through the Power of Siberia pipeline, marking a milestone in a contract that envisions over 1 trillion cubic meters in total supply.
The announcement was made by Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
"One hundred billion cubic meters of Russian gas have been delivered to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline—part of the largest gas contract in the history of the industry, totalling over one trillion cubic meters. This is just the beginning of a long journey. The contract is valid until mid-2049," said Miller.
He also announced that by 2027, Gazprom will begin deliveries to China through a second pipeline route—the "Far Eastern" route.
"Our partnership with China is built on mutual trust and a shared commitment to development and prosperity. As our Chinese colleagues say, the longer the friendship, the stronger it grows. Projects like Power of Siberia and the Far Eastern route are more than just energy supplies — they are a strong link between our countries and peoples, a mutually beneficial cooperation for many, many years to come," Miller emphasised.
Since December 1, 2024, Gazprom has brought the Power of Siberia pipeline up to its full design capacity of 38 billion cubic meters per year. In previous years, deliveries through the pipeline reached 4.1 bcm in 2020, 10.39 bcm in 2021, 15.4 bcm in 2022, and 22.73 bcm in 2023.
At the end of December last year, Miller reported that Gazprom would exceed its 2024 supply plan, delivering around 31 bcm to China. This represented a year-on-year increase of more than 35% and met about a quarter of China’s additional demand for natural gas.
Power of Siberia is the largest gas transmission system in eastern Russia, with an export capacity of 38 billion cubic meters annually.
The first deliveries of Russian gas to China via this eastern route began in December 2019, following a 30-year contract signed in 2014 between Gazprom and China’s CNPC. The total contracted volume is over 1 trillion cubic meters, with a contract value of $400 billion.
